Motivation matters: Interactions between achievement goals and agent scaffolding for self-regulated learning within an intelligent tutoring system
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this study, we examined the influence of achievement goals and scaffolding on self-regulated learning (SRL) and achievement within MetaTutor, a multi-agent intelligent tutoring system. Eighty-three (N = 83) undergraduate students were randomly assigned to either a control or prompt and feedback condition and engaged in a 1-h learning session with MetaTutor to learn about the human circulatory system. Process and product data were collected from all participants prior to, during, and following the session. MANCOVA analyses revealed that students in the prompt and feedback condition deployed more SRL strategies and spent more time viewing relevant science material compared to students in the control condition. Results also revealed a significant interaction between achievement goals and condition on achievement outcomes, such that learners adopting a dominant performance-approach demonstrated higher achievement in the prompt and feedback condition. Findings are discussed in relation to the role of motivation in self-regulated learning within computer-based learning environments. Implications for the design of pedagogical agents are also discussed. ! 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A correlational survey research design was utilized to investigate self-regulated Learning (SRL) and teacher-student interaction factors that had been realized to have contributive roles in EFL learners' academic success. A sample of 218 EFL learners (male = 102 and female = 116) was drawn with the aid of a prior sample size calculator for the structural equation models from 645 students. They...
متن کاملImpact of Individual Differences on Affective Reactions to Pedagogical Agents Scaffolding
Students’ emotions are known to influence learning and motivation while working with agent-based learning environments (ABLEs). However, there is limited understanding of how Pedagogical Agents (PAs) impact different students’ emotions, what those emotions are, and whether this is modulated by students’ individual differences (e.g., personality, goal orientation). Such understanding could be us...
متن کاملAdaptive Multi-Agent Architecture to Track Students' Self-Regulated Learning
Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) can be designed to improve learning and performance through Pedagogical Agents (PAs) that are designed to foster self-regulated learning through interactions and exchange of information with human learners. PAs are intelligent and follow rational behaviors, but to adaptively track students’ progress, they need to be systematically and specifically designed. Ho...
